3 new women-owned businesses bring new opportunities to Detroit’s North End

Motor City Match funds three new local businesses

DETROIT – Three women entrepreneurs are making waves in Detroit’s North End neighborhood by opening new shops that promise to invigorate the local community.

Beauti Kafa Salon, Modish Creative Co., and Mixd Rolled Ice Cream celebrated their grand openings with a triple ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, June 9.

Located At 7446 Woodward, these small businesses are not just neighbors; they are part of a growing business corridor that is bringing a fresh sense of energy to the area.

Among the new business owners is Christina Magana, who has launched Modish Creative Company in Suite 109. This full-service branding agency is dedicated to helping small businesses and nonprofits thrive.

“First of all, I know what it is like to be a small business owner, and to build something from nothing. I absolutely understand what situation they are in,” Magana shared, expressing her passion for supporting fellow entrepreneurs.

Next door, Marquita Dace is excited to open MIXD Rolled Ice Cream. A lifelong Detroiter and mother of two, Marquita is intentional about her choice to establish her ice cream shop in Milwaukee Junction.

“I didn’t see an ice cream parlor in this vicinity, so I wanted to bring it here, instead of the usual Midtown or Downtown area,” Dace explained, eager to contribute to the local community.

Just a few steps away in Suite 107, Colleen Jackson is thrilled to unveil her new salon, Beauti Kafe. Growing up in the neighborhood, Colleen wanted to create a relaxing space for women.

“I just wanted a place where women can go relax. I wanted to create a nice atmosphere,” Jackson said, highlighting her commitment to fostering a welcoming environment.

The launch of these new businesses has been made possible through Detroit’s Motor City Match program, which awarded more than $160,000 in grants to support their endeavors. Over the past ten years, Motor City Match has been instrumental in helping small businesses, with these three new openings marking the 186th, 187th, and 188th businesses to benefit from the program in the City of Detroit.

As these women embark on their entrepreneurial journeys, they not only contribute to the local economy but also inspire others in the community to pursue their dreams.
