Fatal, fiery crash closes Lodge Freeway for hours

DETROIT – Michigan State Police are investigating a deadly crash that closed a stretch of the Lodge Freeway for hours.

It happened at about 2 a.m., Saturday, June 7, in the northbound lanes, near the Chicago Boulevard ramp. Police believe the driver of an SUV ran off the roadway and up the embankment, causing the vehicle to roll over onto the freeway after crashing into a tree.

The driver -- only identified as a 25-year-old man -- was ejected from the SUV and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash closed the northbound lanes for several hours. It has since been reopened to normal traffic.
