Fire breaks out at Detroit school during graduation ceremony

No injuries reported

DETROIT – Firefighters rushed to Nolan Elementary-Middle School on Detroit’s east side after a fire broke out during a graduation event.

There were no injuries reported and everyone was able to evacuate safely. Firefighters remain on scene to make sure the fire does not rekindle.

The fire broke out during a graduation event Thursday, June 5. The Detroit Police Department noticed the fire and called the Detroit Fire Department just after 10:30 a.m.

Fire crews arrived minutes later to find smoke billowing out of the windows of two floors. While the school had been evacuated, firefighters searched the building to ensure no one else was inside.

The fire was found in a closet of a first-floor classroom where books were stored. It was quickly extinguished.

Local 4 has reached out to the Detroit Public Community School District, but has not heard back as of the time of publishing.
