DETROIT – The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department is investigating after a car got stuck in a large sinkhole that opened up in an alley on Detroit’s west side.
The sinkhole is located along McNichols, between Greenfield and 6 Mile.
A couple was driving home from breakfast on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, when their vehicle got stuck in the sinkhole. Initially, they thought it was just a pothole.
“I’m thinking it was a big pothole,” Renard Jackson, the passenger in the vehicle, told Local 4. “And since she said she couldn’t move the car, I told her hurry up and turn off the car. When I opened up the car, because I’m on the passenger side, I said, It’s a whole hole! I could of fell out!”
Jackson and his wife climbed out of the car and called 911. A tow truck was also at the scene earlier today to remove the car.
A spokesperson for the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department said the area has been blocked off, and steel plates were placed over the sinkhole.
The department is working to determine the cause of the sinkhole.
