Man killed after shooting Trooper during traffic stop on Detroit’s west side

Trooper was shot three times; man succumbed to injuries at the scene

DETROIT – A Michigan State Police Trooper was shot, and the suspect was killed following a shooting on the Lodge Freeway on Detroit’s west side.

The incident occurred on Friday (May 16) at 7:40 p.m. following a traffic stop near Wyoming Avenue.

Michigan State Police Director Colonel James F. Grady II said the Trooper initiated the traffic stop after noticing a violation.

Officials said during the encounter, a physical altercation occurred between the Trooper and the suspect, who was a 41-year-old man out of Highland Park, leading to the suspect firing multiple shots at the Trooper.

The Trooper was struck three times: two rounds hit his vest, and one round struck his shoulder.

In response, the Trooper returned fire, hitting the 41-year-old man, who succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The injured Trooper was transported to Sinai-Grace Hospital by the Detroit Police Department.

“He is stable. His family just arrived here at the hospital. They are in there with him. He is doing well considering the circumstances,” said Grady II.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing and is being handled by the Detroit Police Homicide Task Force, which includes both Detroit police and Michigan State Police investigators.

Grady II expressed gratitude to the medical personnel for their prompt care and to the Detroit police for their assistance in transporting the Trooper.

When asked about the specifics of the traffic stop, Grady noted that details are still limited.

Grady II confirmed that the Trooper has been on the job for just over a year and emphasized the dangers law enforcement officers face.

“This is again another reminder of how the men and women are putting their lives on the line every day to keep everybody safe,” Grady II said.

The Trooper was on a solo patrol at the time of the shooting, and a handgun was recovered at the scene, which was registered to the 41-year-old man.

This is a breaking news story, and updates will be posted as they become available.
